Mostar to Dubrovnik drive: choose your route
The Mostar to Dubrovnik drive connects Herzegovina with the Croatian coast. A hire car lets you stop at Počitelj and approach the coast at your own pace. A journey through the Neretva valley feels different from an inland itinerary through eastern Herzegovina, so choose the route before filling the day with stops.

Route options and border crossings
For the Neretva-valley itinerary, follow Mostar–Počitelj–Čapljina, cross at Doljani–Metković, then continue through the Neretva delta and over the Pelješac Bridge towards Dubrovnik. Local transfer operator KTM Voyage describes the reverse journey on this route as about 146 km and roughly two and a half hours of driving. Use about 150 km and 2½ hours as a starting estimate for the route, then add border waiting, stops and Dubrovnik access separately. Exact addresses and road conditions can change both figures.
One option heads south through the Čapljina area towards Croatia and continues towards Dubrovnik. Doljani–Metković and Bijača–Nova Sela are different crossings serving this region. An inland option via Stolac and the eastern Herzegovina road network approaches Dubrovnik through Ivanica–Gornji Brgat. Check the suitability and status of the precise roads before choosing it.
Bijača–Nova Sela is another crossing option for a different approach. Use the Croatian border guidance and current border notices to identify your crossing. Do not follow an informal shortcut to a crossing whose passenger eligibility or opening arrangements you have not checked.
Documents and rental permission
Ask the supplier to authorise Croatia in writing before travel, including any other countries on your itinerary. If you want to leave the car in Dubrovnik, obtain separate confirmation of the Croatian return branch and international one-way charge. Carry the travel document required for your nationality, your driving licence and any required additional permit, the rental agreement and the vehicle documents provided at collection.
Ask what insurance evidence the supplier supplies for the route. A Green Card is not a substitute for rental permission, and it should not be described as a universal requirement for every traveller or vehicle. The supplier should confirm what must accompany its car.

Transit through Neum or use the Pelješac route?
Once in Croatia, the Pelješac Bridge route provides a way to continue towards Dubrovnik without transiting the Bosnian coast at Neum. A route through Neum is a different choice and adds border formalities. Check the route your navigation actually proposes, particularly if you are trying to avoid repeated crossings.
The European Union’s bridge information confirms the connection around the Neum border transit. This does not remove the initial Bosnia–Croatia crossing from a journey starting in Mostar.
Tolls and road planning
Croatian motorways use toll collection systems; there is no Croatian motorway vignette. A route using a motorway may have different charges from a route using state roads. Consult HAC’s official toll information for the actual motorway sections and vehicle category.
Use current traffic information rather than a fixed promise about queue length. Weather, roadworks and border checks can change the plan. Avoid making an evening flight or a strict return deadline depend on an uninterrupted drive.
Stops between Mostar and Dubrovnik
Počitelj can be a stop on a route through the lower Neretva valley. Ston is an option if your itinerary approaches Dubrovnik from the Pelješac side. Pick stops that match your route; do not assume every scenic place lies on the fastest journey.
Park only where signs allow, leave room for local traffic and keep luggage out of sight. In Dubrovnik, ask your accommodation about vehicle access and parking before arrival. The Old Town is not somewhere to drive around looking for a space, and an accommodation pin may not be an accessible car entrance.
Returning the rental
For a round trip, leave time for the return crossing, refuelling and inspection. Save the branch address and return instructions offline before leaving Mostar, especially if you expect to return after dark.
